Review of Brick (2006) by Jj M — 31 Jul 2011
You get the whiff of a well-funded college film project from this. Sure, it's intricately plotted, is fairly clever and has a few catchy quirks. But when you probe beneath the street language and the tolerable coolness, it feels very hollow.
And deeply pretentious (the moment on the beach when 'The Pin' cites Tolkien as his inspiration is damn-right pitiful!). The people behind this failed to realise what's on the great outside.
They instead wallow around in a shell feeling self-satisfied at having created something mildly interesting. If I was a lecturer correcting this, it would just about be a pass.
