Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Alexey F — 30 Aug 2009
Smarter people have said more meaningful things about Breaking The Waves and they're all correct. Lars Von Trier puts the character of Bess through the ringer but it never becomes heavy handed. And what makes it work is Emily Watson in a performance that needs to be mentioned as one of the greatest in the history of film.
This is raw acting! You don't feel the mechanical craft of wonderful acting. It feels like you're watching a real human being on screen and that's the biggest compliment I can give an actor.
Be fair warned this is an emotionally brutal movie, i'm not a crier during movies but this one had me absolutely weeping. That last scene is a killer!!
