Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Alexey F — 11 Mar 2010
A tale about wheat harvesters in the Texas Panhandle at the turn of the 20th century. More of a visual poem than a full-bodied story, this movie is a stunning series of beautifully crafted images. A love triangle that ends tragically - the performances are subtle and economical.
So many of the scenes with dialogue made me think about the screenwriter's edict to "come in late and get out early." The younger sister's broken English voiceover adds an earthy, melancholy, sometimes humorous touch.
Quite an impressive film. Melancholy, mesmerizing, painterly, beautiful, deeply original.
