Review of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) by Rose A — 20 Sep 2011
The first problem I have with Breakfast at Tiffany's is (of course) the over-the-top racist Mickey Rooney character. Different era or no, it's painful to watch. The second problem is that, for women, it idealizes a lifestyle centered around superficial attractiveness, manipulation, and financial dependence on men.
Sure, the main character isn't presented as exactly functional, but women still want to be Holly Golightly. She's lovely and charming, but a terrible role model overall.
