Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Alex D — 23 Mar 2009
"Boyz 'N the Hood" is a gritty look at street life in 1984 South Central Los Angeles. The film was released in 1991, and at the age of 23, director John Singleton has crafted a very accomplished film.
Cuba Gooding Jr. is Tre, a young man trying to live his life in South Central Los Angeles. He faces tough situations daily, including neighborhood shootings.
The film is filled with great performances from Gooding Jr, Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, along with a nice turn from Ice Cube.
It's tough to sit through at times, but "Boyz 'N the Hood" turns out to be a rewarding, and at times poignant look at life on the street.
