Strong performances and focused narrative make this a memorable and gritty coming of age story. It focuses on three youths in 80's Los Angeles, a drug dealer, an up and coming football star, and a college man.
The movie is tense and powerful without being preachy, and is one of the more sweeping writer/director debuts.
