Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Troy F — 08 Sep 2011
Unless I'm missing another film, this is the best drama taking on the subject of black people's lifestyles as it explores low neighbourhoods and the crime that is included with the choices that are made.
Director John Singleton seems to know all of this from experience, and the material really does show. Lead off by a powerful cast, Boyz N The Hood follows Tre's life growing up as an underachiever with more potential than most others, mainly his friends.
Tre represents what may be the average black man up and coming in the low neighbourhood life and what choices they are put through in their lives, while other characters represent types that make certain decisions.
One may choose to focus on school and their careers, while others may waste their lives or look for trouble. We see the uprises and consequences that come with each, making the message clear that black people have difficult lives and are often misunderstood people due to how media exposes them.
Boyz N The Hood gives you the right insight on all of this, and with absolute brilliance.
