Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Tom T — 07 Sep 2010
Boyz n the Hood is a powerful drama that shows an unapologetic look in urban areas.
The film focus on a group of friends who are in an important stage in their lives, they are trying to find which path to take in a world that has consumed their youth. Two of them are inspiring college students and one is a gangster. What I like about the film was that it made sure to not put melodrama and focus on the underlying drama of teens suffering horrible urban conditions. It?s not sugar coated, instead it tells the truth. A problem until this day is still a problem in our nation, teens killing teens, racism, drugs.
John Singleton expertly directs drama with full force shoving us straight in to the face of despair, dreams being shattered and blood. The film is acted great by actors who were upcoming Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne. The movie shows how we blindly ignore the issues with urban areas and how teens are suffering for it.
A classic that has aged well.
MP ***** 5/5.
