Review of Boys Town (1938) by Vincent H — 24 Nov 2010
While Spencer Tracy delivers an excellent, restrained performance as Father Edward Flanagan, a priest who establishes a community for wayward boys in Nebraska, Boys Town drips with sentimentality. The film isn't bad, per se; on the contrary, it begins as a sincere and touching telling of how Boys Town was created.
Unfortunately, it soon devolves into melodramatic schmaltz. Mickey Rooney is good, if a little over-the-top, as the tough, new kid in Boys Town, and the supporting cast is serviceable.
