Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Steve S — 17 Mar 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
A stunning and moving documentary that is a must for those who enjoy watching real life stories unfold. It is a story that hasn't been told before that I've seen.
The setting is the slums of Calcuta, India and its dirty Red Light District where thoudand of children are born into poverty to the countless prostitutes and the poor. Zana Briski, a photojournalist from Great Britain visits this area and becomes friends with the children. She supplies each of them with a camera and has them take whatever they want. What they choose to photograph says much about their world and gives them needed motivtion.
