Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Wes M — 15 Jul 2010
"The story sucks them in." ~ Jack Horner.
The porn industry has never been so interesting! haha but seriously, this is a helluva movie. PTA's movies are so realistic, you'd think they really happened. To all the prudes out there that will avoid this film cuz it's about sex, I say you're an idiot. This is about so much more than that. I mean, yes, the setting is the Golden Age Of Porn (late 1970s to mid '80s), but there is a rich and vibrant tapestry that Paul Thomas Anderson paints these characters into. You can fall into and out of love with these characters so easily. And the pacing, this one flies by, you wouldn't realize that it's a 2.5 hour flick. Everything: actors, script, the camera, the music, the sex, the violence, the irony....perfect. How Mark Wahlberg didn't even get nominated baffles me. Oh, and the last third gets immensely dark and ominous, really complements the other 2/3 of the film nicely. I think There Will Be Blood is still my favorite P.T. Anderson, but I definitely liked this more than Magnolia. Don't get me wrong, Magnolia is also fantastic, but I just found that these characters, their stories, and the speed of the movie were unrivaled. So yea, check this out.
