Review of Bone Tomahawk (2015) by Kyle B — 02 Feb 2016

I was very hesitant going into this movie because cannibal western is not something I would be able to stomach but being able to watch it at home and mute and turn my laptop away at gross out scenes. I love modern westerns and this definitely adds into the list with a wonderful ensemble with stand out performances from Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox and great performances from Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins.

I've always loved Wilson and even in bad movies he is always a highlight but here is a wonderful showcase for his talents. I enjoyed Matthew Fox on Lost but his jump to movies have not been very successful but here he was almost transformative.

Russell really shows why we need 2 Kurt Russell westerns every year with this and Hateful Eight. I think he is stronger here but this isn't as much as an ensemble piece as Hateful Eight. Richard Jenkins does his typical solid work and some of the others supporting players like David Arquette are great too.

I think it does take a little too long to get its groove especially in the middle but the whole movie is pretty thrilling and suspenseful especially the last 30 minutes. It's a really solid movie and worth your time for rental.
