Review of Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006) by Christopher B — 20 Apr 2008
Bon Cop, Bad Cop Movie. This reminds me of a lot of the Turkish horror films I've seen recently, trying to emulate American genre flicks and having a strange non-American feel to it. Chase scenes cut to odd rock music, peculiar lighting and archetypal characters that, while being tweaked slightly to fit Canadian culture, ring false in the fact that they neither fit the archetype or anyone in reality. Pacing is non existent and characters act on things the audience knows nothing about (eg. Finding the two people trapped in a trunk in a parking garage). Plus, I'm afraid that a lot of the Canadian culture in this film is based more on how we are perceived by other countries than based in anything truly cultural. It's sad when our Country's culture is dictated by what others think of us.
However, I guess what truly makes this film "Canadian" is (I won't go the easy route and say "because it sucks") it's pigheaded resolve not to entertain the way an American film might, since that would be perceived as stooping down to their level.
