Review of Body and Soul (1947) by Peter H — 22 Aug 2007
For me, the final 10 minute boxing fight sequence in this film is better than any (even Raging Bull) for gritty realism. This is cynical film noir-ish entertainment written & directed by blacklisted political left-wingers.
Featuring John Garfield's defining role as the intense, morally wounded aging boxer overcome with greed & desire of a glamorous lifestyle, who falls deeper into the hands of his corrupt & ruthless bosses.
The moral outspoken references to "stinking blood money" maybe a little overdramatic but this is a key film on the depiction of the empty soul of the American Dream.
