Scarily prescient, given that it was made in 1992. If the title character were female and a beauty queen rather than a folksinger, we'd have Sarah Palin. I don't actually like Robbins that much, either as an actor or as a director, and the film is often uncomfortable to watch, but it's necessary.
And the acting is spot-on throughout.
