It was a titanic challenge to recreate the magic of the original. And it didn't work. There is no the ''background'' motivation of the original, the scenes come in more by chance rather than by consequence, and everything lacks the sparkling rythm that seized your attention many years ago.
Citing the old performances doesn't help, to my taste. God bless Aretha.
