Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Raji K — 02 May 2015
Blue Velvet is the story of a murder mystery presented in a small town called Lumberton. Kyle Maclachlan plays Jeffrey Beaumont who is returning home to visit his sick father only to discover a severed ear on the ground.
He cannot help, but be intrigued by the mystery of the ear and decides to investigate a possible suspect (Isabell Rosselllini). In only a David Lynch like fashion, the mystery and direction move at an intriguing and slow pace.
At each turn it is unclear what could happen at any moment, and the film certainly has a bit more style than substance. The film features tons of dark and bizarre moments that only Lynch himself would write and create.
For a movie made in 1986, it is quite ahead of its time as far as the style, and psychological components that are more common in films today. The film as is common with Lynch contains several metaphors and subtexts that will perhaps only be more revealing on subsequent viewings.
