Simple that turns to messed up. The acting was horrible to make this even worse, writing was messed up too. MacLachlan's character was an oddball, and his actions did not make much logical sense. "Oh sure, I find an ear, and that makes me want to pretend to be an exterminator and go into a suspect's apt., steal her keys and then hide in her closet to prove she's somehow related to an ear." This helped contribute to my felling that sometimes I felt I was watching a cheap sitcom. There was a good Heineken bit though that Hopper totally captured.
In the robotic robin did come back to complete her odd dream and they all lived happily ever after.
