Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Shana M — 21 Mar 2011
I can't get the song Blue Velvet out of my head after watching this. Another disturbing, bizarro mystery thriller from Lynch reminiscent of Fire Walk with Me. Dennis Hopper was terrifying as the disgusting womanizing mafioso in this film and Kyle felt right in his role as the unsuspecting all american boy.
I didn't give this film a killer rating because it was a bit of a stretch in terms of storyline. There were at least 3 things that didn't add up. 1. I doubt anyone would find an ear on an abandoned path and pick it up and bring it to the police station, you would just call the police yourself.
2. No one in their right mind would ever take civil justice into their own hands to the degree of hiding in someones apartment to stalk them for criminal intelligence, the police would never be able to use that intelligence in court or to get a search warrant and you yourself could be detained for meddling with a case.
3. Lynch's portrayal of women rubbed me the wrong way with showing such a pathetically suppressed crazy woman who subjects herself to severe abuse in order to protect the life of her husband and child.
Really, if someone took my husband and child and was trying to blackmail me and torture me I would call the police not lay around for years being beaten and abused and knowing my husband and child were being subjected to the same.
..Also Kyle's girlfriend doesn't even really question him about his affairs with 'crazy lady' nor does she ask him why he would be involved with a victim of abuse (which is just wrong).
However, Lynch did remind us that there definitely are a lot of secrets and disturbed people even in small quaint towns.
