Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Kevin R — 15 Sep 2012
Yes. That's a human ear alright.
In a small town with little going for it a young man discovers an ear in a field. He begins an investigation that uncovers a strange underworld of violence and crime. The more he investigates the more he gets involved. Can the boy get out of what he's getting into or will he get sucked into the world or killed in the process?
"Hello, baby.".
"It's daddy to you, shithead. Where's my bourbon?".
David Lynch, director of Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, and Wild at Heart, delivers Blue Velvet. The storyline for this movie is amazing and reminds me of a better version of Wild at Heart. The dialogue and action is excellent and the interactions between characters are intense and well executed. The cast delivers wonderful performances and includes Dennis Hopper, Isabella Rosellini, Kyle MacLachlan, and Laura Dern.
"It looks like the ear was cut off with scissors.".
For some reason I had thought I had already seen this and failed to watch it over the years. I wasn't a huge fan of Mulholland Dr and thought I saw this and felt the same way. Well, I watched this again for the first time and was amazed at how much I adored this picture. This is definitely a smashing film worth watching and adding to your DVD collection.
"You stay alive, baby. Do it for Van Gogh.".
Grade: A+.
