Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Samantha A — 29 Jan 2013
There's something fascinating about how Blue Valentine has interwoven both the blossoming and the disintegration of a marriage in parallel. It's not an uplifting experience by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a rawness here that you don't see very often in films.
Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams do a great job bringing to life emotionally damaged characters that love hard and fight harder. I just wish that the story grabbed me more than it did. There was something unsatisfactory about not seeing what led to the downfall, and we're left to assume a whole lot to fill in the blanks.
To me, this is spectacle more than story.
