Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Kilgore T R — 23 Apr 2014
I guess I don't get it.
As a character study of a woman who fell into madness due to her husband's crimes, it was very good: Blanchett did a great job of playing that part.
And in fact all who acted in it did a very good job.
BUT THE STORY PRETTY MUCH SUCKED.
The plot was very thin, the directing and cinematography not even as good as in most others.
As you can see from the ratings here, the professional critics rate it highly and the average audience member - not so much.
I personally thought both Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight In Paris were leagues above this one and this one would be down there with To Rome With Love if not for the fact that it was a showcase for Blanchett and she pulled it off with flying colors.
But a good character matched with a good actress does not a great movie, make.
