Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Ahmedaiman1999 — 08 Apr 2020
It starts so boring and tedious but as the plot unravels the film gets more and more interesting. Sadly, it seems that at some points Allen is clueless about the direction the story goes to. Mind, I think the film depicts the protagonist's mental disorder fairly well, especially by striking a balance in narrating her past and present life simultaneously, but I think the film as a whole ended up as a half-baked character study. Plus, I'm not sure about the ending.
One thing I'm sure about is that the film wouldn't have been half as good without Cate Blanchett in this Oscar-winning performance. She carried the whole film on her shoulders and fleshed out her troubled character brilliantly. Also, Sally Hawkins is simply fantastic. I always think she manages to bring some kind of honesty like no other actor in every role and here I think she's even better than ever. The chemistry between the two is also amazing, and I was truly captivated whenever their storylines intersect with each other because, apart from the great performances, their contradicted personalities are wonderfully juxtaposed.
