Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Jody M — 02 May 2014
Another gem written and directed by Woody Allen. Cate Blanchett's performance is spellbinding.
She plays a former New York socialite who's attempting to adjust to life in San Francisco while living with her estranged sister Ginger.
As each narrative layer is peeled away in a series of flashbacks, it's clear that beneath the flash and glamour there's serious dysfunction within the family unit. This ultimately leads to Jasmine's breakdown.
Watching Jasmine's fall from grace is almost like watching a car crash; you can't help but watch, even though at times you want to look away. That's what really is one of the strengths of this picture; it pulls you in by the strong performances of the primary characters.
Recommended for strong performances and a must-watch for any Woody Allen fan.
