Review of Blue Collar Boys (2012) by Michael G — 14 Sep 2012
Blue Collar Boys is s a hard-charged tough as nails drama that was grounded, accurate and completely in step with what is actually occurring in our nation since the economic fallout of 2008. The acting is far superior to most indy fare, with standout performances by Gabe Fazio, Kevin Interdonato, and Josh Paled.
The direction is tight, and the overall effect is brutal. It's a film in the style of "Mean Streets" or Paul Schrader's working class master piece "Blue Collar." It shows characters talking over each other, fighting, laughing and doing horrible things all in the name of survival.
This movie does not pull punches, does not tie things in a bow, and is un- compromised. What it does NOT do is offer a cozy "Hollywood friendly" portrait. It has flaws, certainly,a vague criminal endeavor sub-plot, and a conclusion with an unclear resolution.
But these flaws still serve the overall statement. Life for these characters is toil, sweat and a lack of resolution. I guarantee you there are roughly 42 million people currently living in America under the poverty line who can relate.
This movie knocked it out of the park. And to all naysayers who hide behind condescension or require a more sanitized viewing experience I say, wake up, stop hanging out at the Cineplex and grow a pair.
