Review of Blow-Up (1966) by Rick S — 25 Feb 2008
Produced by Carlo Ponti, this film has it all. Based on a short story, Las Babas del Diablo by Argentinean writer Julio Cortazar , this British/Italian film by Michelangelo Antonioni is his first English-language attempt.
Blowup is the story of a fashion photographer who may have caught a crime on film and obsessively enlarges his photo shoot to try to discover the secret. It stars the then young and sexy actors Vanessa Redgrave and David Hemmings in what might or might not be a murder mystery.
Later parodied by Mel Brooks in High Anxiety and by Mike Myers in Austin Powers International Man of Mystery the film is set in London of the 60s. It features a performance of The Yardbirds with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck doing Stroll On.
Besides winning Cannes Grand Prix and two Oscar nominations (Best Director and Screenplay), it received notoriety as the first British film to present full frontal nudity (Redgrave).
