Review of Blow-Up (1966) by Dave A — 07 Nov 2008
I read a review of this film recently which said it is 40 years ahead of its time, which is strange because to my eyes it is very much of its time and has dated really badly...
It's an occasionally stylish tale set in 60s Swinging London: a frustrated, arrogant, voyeuristic fashion photographer accidentally photographs a murder (or does he?).... To be honest, most of the film has little substance and is frequently tedious. It is supposedly thought provoking, but by the end of it about 3/4 of my brain felt dead...
Notable for a performance from The Yardbirds when Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were both members and some pretty girls wearing pretty dresses, but it has little else going for it - doesn't deserve the cool reputation it has. As far as English language Antonioni directed films go, I much prefer Zabriskie Point, despite its ham-fisted, pretentious "radicalism".
