Review of Bloody Sunday (2002) by John C — 16 Mar 2010
Between this and United 93, I'm convinced Paul Greengrass is one of the best directors for tackling historical tragedies.
He breaks down the anatomy of a massacre, the madness and chaos, in a way that we can examine its cause. All the while, the film feels organic, making the audience feel witness to the events unfolding before our eyes.
When the killing started, I was left outraged, saddened, shocked, and even a bit frightened. Greengrass puts you there, in the middle of it all.
My only complaint was the technique of fading out and in between every sequence--for me it disrupted the rhythm and called attention to the fact I was watching a movie, when everything else made me feel I was witnessing events.
