Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Josh C — 28 Apr 2011
Rewatching the Coens' debut (anticipating the Zhang Yimou remake) I am struck by how faithful they are to genre, how creative they are with violence, and how careful (or insanely lucky?) they are with casting.
The only thing lacking here is production values, really. I am also thinking about people who complained that, starting with No Country for Old Men, the Coens have been on a real nihilist jag, jamming home meaninglessness for Chigurh's victims or Chad Feldheimer's victims, or Professor Larry Gopnick.
These bleak horizons are right there in Blood Simple when Dan Hedaya goes into the ground or later in Miller's Crossing even though there are all those lovely pines growing in it.
