Review of Blood Creek (2009) by Patrick E — 20 Jun 2010
Blood Creek is a decent horror film that was made for theatrical release but ended up on the straight to dvd list. Directed by Joel Schumacher it's tells the story of a German family living in America in the 1930's. They receieve a visit by a supposed german historian who actually turns out to be one of Himmlers minions sent to research the power of the occult with the intention to use it to win the war. Cut to present day and after the scape of one brother from the german families house, two brothers go back to kill to family which are somehow still alive and young. What they don't expect to see is a living dead nazi historian hell bent on drinking their blood and becoming all poerfull.
Now with a plot like that how could Blood Creek fail? Well it doesn't for the most part but you can't help but feel that they didn't take advantage of the excellent premise. It's hot very well, it's dark throughout some great sets and a good sense of tension however there is truly awful CGI in later scenes which really cheapen the whole thing. Once the nazi is relased we are stuck firmly in cliché horror territory as the brothers bombard themselves in the house and try to stay alive. The ending is very anti-climatic and is one huge plot-hole compared to what came before. It's not even slightly scary and and more time should have been spent creating effectiv scares rather than CGI gore.
It does still manage to entertain and at under one and a half hours it moves along at a nice pace. But with an inetesting and original premise it's hugely disappointing that it ends up being nothing new. Worth a look though.
