Review of Bleach (2018) by Will S — 24 Oct 2018
Overall not the best or worst anime-to-movie conversion. I'll start with the pros - The hollows looked cool, and I liked that the original voice actors for Ichigo, Orihime, and Uryu were used. There are several things I did not like.
The first being what I dislike about all of these anime conversions, which is the need to make the movies either all Japanese or all American when the truth is that it should be a combination of both.
Bleach is the perfect anime to do this with because everyone goes to the Soul Society, not just Japanese people. I hope if they make a sequel that they keep this in mind. There are obviously Caucasian, Hispanic, and black characters in Bleach.
I would argue Kisuke Urahara is white inspite the name since he has blonde hair. Regardless, they do not even attempt to color his hair in the movie. Orihime is another one who has orange hair in the anime/manga but black hair in the movie.
Another issue is that they make the movie a little more silly than it needs to be. Ichigo's sword looks ridiculous and is not shaped like his sword in the anime, Uryu's bow is 2-3 feet taller than the actor, and Renji was wearing some black leather eye mask on his head instead of the glass/goggle device or white bandana in the anime.
Lastly, the storyline details were not spot on with the anime. I preferred the scene with Ichigo, Renji, and Byakuya 10 times better in the anime. I have never seen Rukia in a ponlytail, but she sports one the entire movie.
Also, Byakuya Kuchiki would never have ordered Renji to kill Rukia. If you like anime, you will probably think it is worth watching. If you do not watch anime, then you probably will stop watching after the first 15 minutes.
