One of my all-time favourite movies. I just keep coming back to it, and the soundtrack, again and again and again. An absolute must-see for any sci-fi fan, and truly a beacon to future sci-fi film makers, THIS movie sets a standard, a precedent few have ever managed to reach.
Shows us a dirty, dark future, the 'Shanghai on a bad night' visuals are truly striking, with neon signs and booming voices telling us to "Discover a new life off-world", for a movie made in 1982 it is SO far ahead of its time.
The sheer darkness of the cinematography gives the film an ambience few - if any - have managed to duplicate, and the underlying theme of 'I want to LIVE, not just exist' is profoundly affecting.
All done to a soundtrack that continues to astound me to this day. Sheer beauty.
