Review of Blacula (1972) by Ken T — 18 Feb 2011
Definitely a shock. With a title like "Blacula", I was expecting a few politically incorrect racial jokes and statements, along with a hip, jive-talking vampire. The tagline, "His Bite was Outtasite!" further added to my suspicions.
Well, I'm here to say, no chance. What we get is a well-crafted, dramatic vampire story with the most pitiful cinema creature since Frankenstein, Prince Mamuwalde (AKA Blacula). There re lots of times where you genuinely feel bad for this guy, and times hwere you wonder, "Why do I like him? He's killed innocent people!" William Marshall plays Mamuwalde excellently.
If they had changed the title of the film, I'll bet this would be one of celluloid's (considered) masterpieces by the general public.
