Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by Vj L — 14 Oct 2018
Ron Stallworth, Colorado Springs Police Department's first African-American detective, sets out to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. He pretends to be white on the phone while Flip Zimmerman, a fellow detective, pretends be Ron in person to engage with the Klan.
BlacKkKlansman is intense. While the film covers an intense, serious topic, I found it to be very funny. And I think it needed to be. The nature of the topic of this film is heavy. The comedic relief makes this movie approachable.
The comedy is great. It exposes racism's absurdity. The style of cinematography makes the film feel very much so of the 1970s yet the excellent portrayals of the characters, complex scenarios, plot feel absolutely relevant to today.
This movie is powerful. It's funny. It's tragic. It is a film we need.
