Review of Black Sunday (1960) by Michael G — 09 Apr 2007
Mario Bava's first film as credited director has gorgeous photography and some truly breathtaking sequences. However, his displeasure with the screenplay resulted in mid-production re-writes and extensive re-working in the editing, and there are some resultant problems with pacing and the internal logic of the story.
Still, the visuals, the pacing of key scenes, and certain genuinely transgressive moments elevate the picture to the level of those that nobody legitimately interested in the art of cinema should miss.
