Review of Black Orpheus (1959) by Private U — 22 Mar 2008
I had heard all of the praise that this film had received and was excited to see we were watching it for Mythology class. Unfortunately, I just wasn't that impressed by it.
The film adapts the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice into contemporary Rio de Janeiro during Carnivale. The actual adaptation is pretty good, working in believably modern ways that the ancient story would be translated to. However, I feel that Camus' interpretation did not add much to the original. The non-professional actors were a nice touch, but you could tell in certain scenes where there was a fair amount of hamming it up.
