Review of Black or White (2015) by Bobby H — 18 Mar 2015
Black or White is directed by Mike Binder and stars Kevin Costner as Elliot Anderson, Octavia Spencer as Rowena Jeffers, and Jillian Estell as Eloise Anderson. Elliot is raising his mixed race grand-daughter, Eloise, after his daughter died while giving birth and a few years later, his wife died suddenly. Elliot quickly finds himself in a custody battle with Eloise's other grandmother, Rowena.
This story touches on sensitive issues that affect all of us. Alcoholism, racism, drug use, and prejudices. It takes large social issues and brings them close to home. How do we personally deal with these issues is the question I took away from this movie. It doesn't provide a perfect answer in a nice bundle, but let's us decide how we can affect the solutions by our own actions and words. I enjoyed this film and the performances in it. Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer played well off of each other and portrayed their characters well. Go see Black or White and let me know what you think.
