Review of Black or White (2015) by Ethan L — 01 May 2015
Black or White 2015. This was a terrible movie on multiple levels. First, the black family lives in straight outa Compton, while the white family live in a big house, not sure where. Then there's the loud, dark, interrupting, overweight Rowena.
She fits the mammy stereotype so well, it's as if the writers looked up mammy online and then wrote her character. Overweight, dark, maternal, sassy, loud, devoted to whites. Next is her crack addict son Reggie who is the father of the main character, Eloise.
Then there's Elliot, the rich, educated, lawyer, grandfather to Eloise who is tormented by the fact that Reggie knocked up his 17 year old daughter, effectively killing her. Raising Eloise with his wife who dies at the beginning of the movie, Elliot has to fight off Rowena and family who is suing him for custody of Eloise.
Totally and unbelievably stupid. Reggie is a crack addict with a long criminal record, no job, no money, and no education. Why would a judge award sole custody to him? Oh right, the judge is a black woman, that's why.
Why doesn't Rowena fight for joint custody? Why not just get Elliot to allow visits? Sole custody? Totally ridiculous but then we would have no conflict and then no movie... The tutor is a funny guy, Eloise is cute, but a little fake sometimes.
Nothing else about the movie is worth watching.
