Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Rebecca B — 05 Jan 2008
Extraordinary, mesmeric, dazzling, dramatic, brooding, menacing and deeply sexy story of Himalayan nuns. I think this is one of the films that first evoked (certainly for me) the whole terror/fascination of the 'other', not just of sex but of the exotic sensual overwhelming power of the cultural forces of the colonised being barely held at bay by empire and christianity: one of the first instances of the Empire striking back.
And with what subliminal force! A truly amazing film full of portent and resonance in every way.
