Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Larisa L — 05 Apr 2009
This is probably one of the ten or so most visually stunning films I've ever seen, another film in that list would have to be the only other Powell/Pressburger collaberation film I've seen: The Red Shoes.
This is the story of a group of nuns who set up a convent in the mountain of northern India, but more than that it's a film about these nuns as their faith and vows are challenged to keep their purity and modesty, especially their sexual purity and modesty.
The real reason to see the film however is Jack Cardiff's extraordinary cinematography. To say this is beautiful film is an understatement. The beautiful Technicolor, the shadows, shades and contrasts are all brilliant as almost every shot looks as though it's a painting.
Truly a great film and I highly recommend both this and The Red Shoes as both are simply the two of the greatest examples of visual beauty in film.
