Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Atlas O — 04 Jul 2010
Shoots right to the top of my favorite films of all time. second only to 'the birds' as 'best visual manifestation of female jealousy.' it is the tale of a group of nuns sent to start a school in a mountain-top castle in india - and how the climate, sexual culture, and a drippingly sexy swashbuckling british guide awaken feelings as red as the lipstick sister ruth applies with resentful glee.
visually stunning on the level of 'lord of the rings,' the mountainside castle is as fully realized a place as minas tirith or helm's deep. it is a triumph of style and substance - contains many echoes of 'vertigo,' and stands in league with it.
