Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Lord N — 01 Oct 2010
Well, I have never seen a Blaxploitation film (I think that's how you say it)which this film is spoofing. As such, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of jokes and references I did not get. Well, I went in with extremely low expectations. I didn't like this one too terribly much but it was an entertaining film. there were little things that they did that made the film funny. Like, every mistake they made they left in on purpose. For example, there is a scene where Black Dynamite is talking and a boom mike is slightly visible. he look up at it and does a slight double take with a look on his face that clearly says "WTF". Its little things like that that helped the film reach a 60% in my book. I dunno. I guess I kind of liked it. it was a decent way to spend 84 minutes.
TRIVIA TIME:The opening scene which features an African-American actor using an effected quasi-English accent and precise diction while delivering his lines is a play on several well known actors who are featured in blaxploitation yet got their roots in Shakespeare performances. William Marshall, star of Blacula, starred in eight different productions of Othello before playing Mamuwalde/Blacula in 1972.
