Review of Black Death (2010) by James R — 16 Apr 2011
I managed to catch this film whilst I was away on holiday having completely missed its cinematic release (if it ever was actually released in the cinema and it felt very much like a straight to TV movie.
This film is about the plague and in particular a village that seems to be immune because it is heathen and being run by witchcraft. We follow a young monk and a band of mercenaries around as they go and find out exactly what sort of godlessness is going on and put a stop to it.
And that's pretty much it. There isn't a great deal more to this story - a few twists, some quality acting by Sean Bean and some fairly gruesome torture sequences. There is nothing exceptional about this movie, it plods along at its own pace, does its own thing and invites you to watch if you want.
Black Death isn't going to set the world on fire, definitely not, but is still passable and watchable as films go. I have to say that I hated the ending though; I've seen a lot of films recently where I've liked the overall film but the ending feels very much like an unnecessary afterthought.
This is one of those films.
