Review of Black Death (2010) by Alex A — 20 Jun 2011
I may have a man-crush on Sean Bean, but that in no way affects my rating (teeheheh). This is actually a nice little diddy of flick. Never heard of it, but the Beaner is in it, it shits on Christianity, and the Beaner is in it. What more?
Christopher Smith creates a very realistic (for the time) and stimulating thriller/mystery during a very serious time in Europe's past. It's dark as hell, ominous, and savage (just how I like my morning coffee....), but it doesn't rely on violence to accomplish the grim atmosphere. Yes, okay, there is quite a bit of violence, but it's secondary to atmosphere.
Black Death is a nice little surprise to watch during the shite months of Summer Blockbusting Money Wasters.... even though it was made last year. Apparently, according to his fans, Smith is quite the trickster of direction and his other films are "great" as well. I'm in if they're all like Black Death (plus, he's gotta be better the M. Night).
