Review of Black Death (2010) by Michael T — 22 Jul 2011
The 1st hour of this movie is a test of the audience, as it is slow and full of vague foreshadowing. But if you made it that far the last 30 min of the movie was worth it; for the intellectual ideas. Very little in sword play, or CG this was a movie about religious attitudes and moral dilemma.
A pious young piest at war with himself over love of a woman and dedication to God is a very interesting subplot. The church's warrior, Sean Bean's character, comes across both as a fanatic or a conscientiousness believer, depending on who's watching and at what point his character is viewed.
The hypocrisy in the last scene effects every character and is both enlightening and thought provoking. As an action adventure Black Death fails, but as an example of deeper meaning in cinema it is a success.
