Review of Black Christmas (2006) by Guido S — 12 Dec 2013
Nowhere near as bad as I had heard, that fact doesn't in any way mean that this remake version of BLACK CHRISTMAS is a good movie. The characters are one-note, standard horror "types," and there's a shockingly small number of tense or effective moments.
There is a kind of surprisingly fun gross-out element to the killer's activities here, but that comes at the expense of learning too much about the killer's motivations, in contrast to the original, where the killer's background is hinted at, but left far more ambiguous.
As a contemporary slasher film, it's not quite passable, which means that as a remake of a certifiable genre classic (a film that is infinitely more restrained, interesting, and creepy), this is a pretty huge misfire.
