Yes, it's endlessly grim and at times unnecessarily maudlin, but regardless Inarritu has crafted an engaging narrative, more conventionally told than his previous works though just as devastating. However the real key to the movie's success is undoubtedly Bardem's blistering performance.

There are few actors out there who are simply as forceful, convincing, or simply put, as good as he is. An unconventionally Biutiful movie.
