Review of Bitter Harvest (2017) by Brian%20 E — 26 Feb 2017
I personally thought the film was very well done. I saw it with friends who are first generation immigrants from Ukraine, and their parents or grandparents went through the Holodomor. While the film had a few narrative issues, it overall was excellent and really took you from idealistic hopeful Ukraine into a really dark narrative.
They didn't pull many punches, but weren't gratuitous either. I thought it was really well done and I hope more films about Ukraine surface soon. The one thing I do wish had been different, was I wish they had filmed it with Ukrainian and Russian dialog and used English subtitles to further immerse you in the culture, but it was a powerful introduction into one of Stalin's best kept horrific secrets and explains so much of the modern political landscape between Ukraine and Russia.
