Review of Bitter Harvest (2017) by Luba K — 08 Mar 2017
Saw the movie this afternoon with one of my best friends whose mother had survived the Holodomor in Kyiv. Having read over 50 reviews of "movie critic" I was not sure what I was in for but I was determined to honour this genocide.
For all the Holodomor deniers that have made comments...and I wonder you if you are just Putin's well paid Russian trolls...genocide was a term coined by Lemkin....and his definition was based on the Ukrsinian Holodomor.
..go check your history!! The critics were right about some things...the music is fantastic...the critics did not however comment on the beautiful cinematography. The beautiful portrayalls of Ukrainian culture .
..beginning with the harvest festival of Obzhynky and Midsummer's night or Ivanka Kupala were very well done. The embrioidered blouses and shirts were so beautiful I almost found them distracting. Yes it is a love story .
..but it is not nearly as melodramatic as the movie critics would have you believe. And yes it is not Dr Zhivago....neither is it 4 hours long or is Max Irons Omar Sharif. In fact in my humble opinion it is actually a Max Irpns and his distracting British accent that is the weakest link in the movie.
And of yes...for the person who asked where is Lazar Kaganovich....go see the movie again...he was in at least 3 scenes that I saw!!! All in all...it is a movie worth seeing and taking your non-Ukrainian friends to.
As the movie will now be playing for at least an additional week...I intend to go back...this time with non-Ukrainian friends who like good music, good cinematography, history and romance!
