Review of Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010) by Joey S — 20 Jan 2012
It takes a rare breed, say, a Tommy Wiseau, to bring us such a terrible and yet genuine film. James Nguyen fills that role admirably...I mean, obviously the man has no business in directing films, and yet, at the same time, thank God he is!
Look, there is a difference between terrible GOOD and terrible BAD. Terrible bad is when you create a movie that is so vile that it lacks any universal appeal; nothing can be called "funny" about it, and you cannot pull enjoyment from any aspect of its production. A good example? Take anything starring Tom Green or directed by Eli Roth; both would be terrible films, but its not because of a lack of budget, or direction (per say) but they commit some Original Sin of being either vile, offensive, or unwatchable for whatever reason.
Terrible Good films are those that make an honest effort and just, well...fail; they are not intended to offend or play upon "shock" for the sake of itself...they are just laughable bad and, in some odd part of the mind for many, enjoyable in their badness. Part of humor, after all, stems from the absurd, and films like Birdemic manage to fit that bill to a T!
